AT a time when a number of sporting teams in various codes are battling for survival in regional areas, it is more important than ever for locals to support their hometown clubs.
Greg Brimble, principal dealer at Western Plains Automotive, is a firm believer in that and that is why he has agreed recent sponsorship deals with the Dubbo Kangaroos rugby club and Dubbo CYMS.
The deal with CYMS not only encompasses rugby league but also cricket and touch football.
"It makes you proud that maybe you've contributed in some small way when they meet with success on and off the field," Brimble said of the sponsorship deals.
"It's tough for all sporting teams in regional areas to get funding so to be able to provide funding and give them the support they need to survive and to excel as well is something which is very pleasing from our point of view and we get a lot of pride and pleasure from it."
In rugby league alone, the likes of the Cobar Roosters and Lithgow Workies clubs have struggled to stay afloat in 2016 while in rugby union there are a number of sides in the central west battling to form under-19s colts sides.
While that is not all down to sponsorship and local support, Brimble said it us up to individuals and business to help out their community wherever they could.
"It's really, really important because you look at some of the football clubs, league in particular in country NSW and some of the problems they've had and they're folding after being around for 60, 70 or 80 years," he said.
"Now they're folding because they're not getting the support from the NRL and CRL that they maybe should be.
"... out here are clubs doing it really tough and some quite simply are not surviving and if business in some way can help and prop them up, not only by sponsorship but if we can help employ players then that's another way we can support the clubs and keep the players here."
As a proud rugby union fan, Brimble said he was more than happy to get onboard with the Roos again while he described CYMS as "high achievers with a lot of success recently" and said he wanted to be involved with successful clubs which were "well organised".
Brimble added he and other "big businesses" in Dubbo had a responsibility to support local teams while adding it was a good investment, with sporting teams from Dubbo teams achieving plenty of success both at home and across the central west in recent years.
