Brief Overview of Dubbo CYMS Club History

Dubbo CYMS was formed in 1947 playing in the local Saturday competition until the clubs acceptance into the group XI competition in 1958.

The club struggled in its early years to record a win for that matter even a score line that placed them within 20 points of the opposition.

In 1961 the CYMS under 18 juniors recorder the clubs first ever grand final victory & club premiership.

It took until 1966 for the club to record its second premiership with the reserve grade side winning the competition.

In 1968 the club signed Ken McMullen as first grade captain coach this proved to be a master stroke with Ken taking the first grade to the clubs first ever first grade premiership in 1969

Ken stayed on as captain coach until 1972 during this time he lead the first grade side to the 1970 first grade grand final, in 1971 Ken lead first grade to its second premiership and the club to a history breaking all 3 grades premiership.

In 1975 CYMS signed Canterbury forward and 1974 grand final player John McDonald as captain coach in John’s first and only year with the club he led the first grade side to its third first grade premiership.

From 1976 to 1985 CYMS won 2 junior premierships (1976 & 78) one reserve grade premiership and not until the signing of Steve Hall as captain coach in 1986 did the club claim its forth first grade premiership.

From 1987 to 2000 the club went without a first grade premiership however during this time the club claimed 6 reserve grade premierships and three junior premierships

2001 seen the club return to the winners list under the coaching of Bernard Wilson winning the first grade premiership & the juniors claiming the clubs premiership under the watch full eyes of coaches Shane Madden & Greg McIntosh.

In 2002 the club claimed its sixth first grade premiership under Coach Justin Yeo & the Fourteenth reserve grade premiership under Coach Robbie Dunn

In 2003 the club was victories in the first grade with again winning the premiership this time under the coaching staff of Bernard Wilson & Justin Yeo

2004 the club was represented in the grand finals in all 3 grades With the first grade winning its fourth consecutive premiership under coach Tim Ryan & the reserve grade winning its Fifteenth premiership under coach Robbie Dunn

In 2005 the club was represented in the reserve grade & junior’s grand final winning the clubs sixteenth reserve grade premiership under Coach Brett Patterson and the clubs twelfth junior title under Coach Rod Frail

2006 was the first year in some 14 years that the club was not represented in a Group XI grand final

2007 seen the signing of Dean Pay as clubs first grade coach with the first grade taking out the premiership giving the club a total of 9 first grade premierships, reserve grade under coach

Shane Madden were successful in obtaining the clubs seventeenth reserve grade title.

2008 saw Dean Pay take the first grade to another grand final where they were runners up, Shane Madden took the reserve grade to their eighteenth premiership & Rod Frail took the juniors to their consecutive grand final only to be runners up.

In 2009 Justin Yeo and Shawn Townsend took the first grade to a thrilling first grade premiership over Parkes that saw teenage sensation Nigel Ray score the winning try in the last 1minute 44 seconds of the game to bring the number of first grade titles for the club to 10.

In 2010 the Tim O’Neill led reserve grade side claimed their 19th reserve grade premiership.

In 2011 Luke Jenkins and Blake Tremain-Cannon led first grade to its 11th premiership against Parkes at Pioneer oval with Fijian winger Jovilisi Tawake (Tiger) scoring with 3 minutes to go to level the scores at 20 all and a brilliant side line conversion by Joe Williams to seal the premiership with the final score at 22-20

In 2012 The Joe Williams first grade side were runners up to Macquarie in the first grade grand final, The reserve grade side finished out of the semi final contention while the Justin Yeo juniors added another under 18 premiership to the clubs impressive total.

In 2013 all three grades finished off the season as minor premiers with the club winning the group X1 club championships & the Laurie Walsh trophy with the club scoring the most tries in a season (299) the club was represented in all 3 grades in the Grand finals. The Joel Rapley led reserve grade side collected the clubs 20th reserve grades premiership with a hard fought victory over Nyngan 10-nil

The Wayne Sing coached under 18’s convincingly won the junior premiership against Dubbo Macquarie 44-18.

The Tim Ryan coached first grade were beaten by Parkes 30-18.

In 2014 the club was successful in achieving all 3 grades into the Grand Final. This is the second year in a row the club has been represented in all 3 grades. Since 2000 the club has on 6 occasions been represented in all 3 grades on Grand final day.

The club also won the group X1 club championships & the Laurie Walsh trophy for the most tries scored by a first grade side in a season.

Tim Ryan Coached first Grade side were successful against Parkes in the Grand Final winning 34-20

The Joel Rapley & Chris McGhee coached reserve grade side went to the Nyngan Tigers in a nail bitting finish 22-20.

Wayne Sing coached juniors met a very determined Forbes magpie side going down 16-10.

In all, the club has amassed a total of 45 premierships in its 55 years playing in group X1. 12 first grade titles, 19 reserve grade & 14 junior premierships. Since 2001 the club has won 21premierships in the 3 grades.

The most titles by an individual group X1 club in post war history.
