The Ryan Medley Appeal Update

The Ryan Medley Appeal Update

February 2018 marks 8 months since that Sunday afternoon in June when Ryan Medley received a serious spinal injury damaging his C4 vertebrae. The injury caused a partial tear to his spinal cord while he was playing rugby league with his mates and beloved CYMS club.

Ryan is now attending the ‘Ryde Rehab’ where he is undergoing intense physiotherapy and treatment to assist him in being able to regain his finer motor skills. This rehabilitation journey will assist him in returning to somewhat of a normal life of independence.

The 8 months has moved quickly for some and not so quick for others. In particular it has been a long, drawn out and sometimes very frustrating time for Ryan, his wife Cassie, Dad Brian & Mum Janelle. All have been alongside Ryan during the not so good days and the better days where he demonstrates a degree of determination and motivation he has never experienced before. Brian has spent endless hours assisting Ryan in his recovery, arriving at hospital every morning, bright and early, to assist Ryan in getting ready for the day of intense rehabilitation. Mum Janelle ensures Ryan’s dietary requirements have been maintained, providing him with wholesome home cooked meals along with his special treats. Wife Cassie has been exceptional, showing great strength and support to her husband. Cassie stands alongside her soul mate, supporting him in his every move and thought as they continue the rehabilitation journey. She most importantly provides the love that inspires Ryan each and every day.

The specialist staff looking after and caring for Ryan are amazed at his progress over the 8 months since his accident. They have explained to Ryan that his progress is advanced compared to similar injuries that people have received around the same time.

Ryan has most recently undergone a 9 hour operation, in which the procedure carried out was to redirect nerve functions into his lower arms to assist in regaining the finer motor skills to his hands and fingers. The procedure was carried out on one arm with the other arm set to receive the procedure in 2 weeks time.

To date the Ryan Medley appeal has raised $268,000. This has been a great achievement in just 8 months, but it is well short of the $350,000 goal we have set to financially assist Ryan, Cassie and his family in his road to recovery and long life ahead.

To date Ryan & Cassie have received assistance from the appeal for various expenses. Most importantly to allow his family to be alongside Ryan and assist with his day to day progress, along with purchasing equipment and aides to assist in Ryan’s rehabilitation.

The next step in The Ryan Medley Appeal, is a Gala Fundraising Dinner that is booked for the Saturday 17th of March at the Dubbo RSL Club. The appeal committee has secured the services of Sydney radio’s 2GB Ray Hadley to MC and auctioneer for the night.

There will be additional information on the event in the days ahead.

Lastly, a short heartfelt note from the Medley Family;

“The level of love, support and well wishes from the community both near and far has completely blown our family away and we are forever grateful for the support.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
