Jets shellshocked in CYMS' 11-try romp

IT took CYMS less than 90 seconds to get their 2015 season under way yesterday and after that they did not look back.

Dynamic fullback Keiran Shipp sliced through inside two minutes at Caltex Park to give his side the lead - one of 11 four pointers for the Fishies on Sunday as they cruised past the Narromine Jets.

"It was a good performance and worked out well," coach Tim Ryan said after the match.

"We've got some new blokes in new positions, but coming here today it was all about defence.

"I thought our attack will come because we've got good blokes that can attack but our defence was good so that was pleasing."

Narromine co-coach Luke Harding, currently out injured, admitted it was difficult coming up against a professional CYMS team in round one

"It was tough and we knew it would be. Obviously they're the benchmark every year," he said.

After Shipp's early effort the game slipped into a lull with the Fishies repeatedly making mistakes and giving away penalties.

"We scored that early try and then we dropped right away, we had four incomplete sets in a row and went mistake after mistake but it's only early in the year and that happens," Ryan said.

But once the defending premiers got their game back on track the points started to flow with forwards Matt Naden and Jarryn Powyer crossing to make it 16-0 after Colby Pellow converted both.

With seven minutes left in the first half winger John Grey scooped up a grubber on his own tryline, beat four defenders and found Ben Marlin, who in turn offloaded to Shipp.

The fullback then raced 50m to finish off a hugely entertaining try.

Pellow, who impressed all match in the number six jersey, showed some neat footwork to score just before half-time and his conversion made it a 28-0 lead at the break.

It didn't take long for CYMS to get going again in the second stanza with Alex Ronayne and then winger Marshall Sing crossing before Alex Bonham eased through a tiring Narromine defensive line to set up a 44-0 lead.

With 15 minutes to go CYMS looked as though they could really run away with it as Grey grabbed a well deserved try.

Pellow and Grey then scored another each inside the final 10 minutes to round out the emphatic win.

Coach Ryan said everyone who took to the field played a part in the win but admitted the halves and hooker combination of Pellow, Luke Jenkins and Bonham, impressed him most.

The only major concern for the Fishies was a number of injuries with Jyie Chapman and Shipp unable to play the majority of the second half after ankle and back knocks respectively while Jarryn Powyer was also limping at fulltime.

Harding admitted his side was outclassed but said there was plenty to take away and work on before next weekend's match against the Nyngan Tigers.

"There's some good signs, obviously out there it's rough to not score a try, would have been nice to get some points on the board but we need to work on some defence and fitness," he said.

"That's the first hit out we've had with a full squad so hopefully we can improve in the weeks to come."
