Tim Ryan won’t admit it but there appears to be little to stop his Dubbo CYMS side this season after the Fishies brushed aside the Forbes Magpies in Sunday’s Group 11 grand final rematch.

The two sides met for the first time since last season’s classic decider, which the Magpies won 26-22, but this time a dominant second half display led CYMS to a convincing 46-22 victory.

Forbes’ chances weren’t helped by match-ending injuries to key forwards Zac Merritt and Ben Maguire in the first half but the men in black and white failed to take chances when they were on offer and as CYMS has proven time and time again, they will make you pay.

Fishies coach Ryan was pleased with the way his side played in the second 40 after leading 18-10 in the break but said a sloppy first half display showed there was a lot to work on.

“A win is a win and we’ll take a few things out of it but there’s wasn’t a lot of positives,” he said.

“The first 40, we were putrid for a period of 20 minutes and in the second half we were better but there’s still a lot to do.

“We can play really well and we completed seven from eight in the first 20 and then none from five in a 15 minute period so the only positive was probably our defence in that period where we defended for about six sets and they didn’t score.”

Viliame Turuva, who has played for both Macquarie and Westside in the past while he currently plays rugby union for the Dubbo Kangaroos, made his first appearance in a CYMS jersey and it was one to remember as he grabbed a hat-trick.

Jarryn Powyer bagged two tries and was again immense in the front row, outplaying a highly-touted Forbes pack.

The Magpies, still mourning the shock passing of club legend Peter Corliss last week, struck first through a Liam Whitfield four-pointer in the corner, but a fumble from the kick-ff allowed Joeby Vetaukula to even it up.

It was soon 10-all after Brad Pickering and Jake Grace swapped tries and after a period of Magpies dominance the Fishies scored through Alex Ronayne and Turuva to take all the momentum into half time.

Jared Tyack scored immediately after the break but it was one-way traffic for the rest of the half, Wade Kavanagh and Todd Grace’s sin-binning after a scuffle adding some spice to the match.

Magpies coaching coordinator Cameron Greenhalgh was left disappointed after the final whistle.

“You can’t afford to switch off against CYMS and we did that at times. You need to play the full 80 or they’ll make you pay with quick points,” he said.

“They did that at the end of the first half and in the second half too.

“I thought we were good for 30 minutes and had them but then they beat us on the edges and there was some lazy tackles on our part.”

CYMS halves Pickering and Alex Bonham again impressed, with the latter’s try and five goals taking him past 100 points for the year while his side sits undefeated at the top of the table after the first half of the season.

DUBBO CYMS 46 (Viliame Turuva 3, Jarryn Powyer 2, Joeby Vetaukula, Brad Pickering, Alex Ronayne, Alex Bonham tries; Bonham 5 goals) defeated FORBES MAGPIES 22 (Liam Whitfield, Jake Grace, Jared Tyack, Marty Herbert tries; Chris Kirby 2 goals)
