Dubbo CYMS scores century as first round match with Westside ends early

Nick Guthrie - Daily Liberal

Dubbo CYMS Tim Ryan admitted there had to be concerns about the Group 11 competition on Sunday after his side defeated local rivals Westside 102-0 in a round one game which was called on 13 minutes

The Fishies ran in an incredible 17 tries and converted every one to announce to the rest of the competition the turbulent off-season and an attempted switch to Group 10 had not taken a toll on the side’s attitude or intent.

But the major talking point was Westside’s capitulation and the way they allowed CYMS to so easily run in try after try.

“You don’t like to see any score like that,” Ryan said, while a number of Westside players opted not to comment after the match.

“I know there’s going to be so good teams and they (Westside) are obviously going through a rough patch but you don’t like to see it.

“I hope they improve and get some numbers.”

Wade Kavanagh was the biggest beneficiary of the lopsided result, scoring a memorable six tries in his first match at centre for the Fishies while Kieran Cubby-Shipp and Jyie Chapman both scored doubles, with the latter particularly outstanding each time he touched the ball.

Alex Bonham, who was sin-binned midway through the first half along with Westside’s CJ Ralph for fighting, scored once and kicked a perfect 10 goals while Brad Pickering, Jarryn Powyer, Lincoln Kavanagh, Ben Marlin, Hayden Howell and Hamish Astill also scored tries in a result which had many CYMS fans searching for the record books.

It was the second time in the past year a side has hit triple figures after eventual premiers Forbes 106-12 midway through last season.

The writing was on the wall early at Caltex Park as CYMS scored two tries in the opening ten minutes and it was a procession from there.

Kavanagh had three and CYMS had 52 in the first half while the opening half hour alone was action-packed with seven tries and then the punches thrown from Bonham and Ralph.

The second half was full of brilliant long-range efforts as the Fishies went 100m to score in nearly each of the first sets from a kick-off.

Pickering, impressive in his first competitive match since making the move from the Nyngan Tigers, scored an outstanding individual try while the younger Kavanagh was on hand to finish a number of blistering attacks and an exhausted Westside defence allowed him to run around under the black dot each time.

As the score approached triple figures both sides began discussing the mercy rule and ending the game early and when Astill’s try brought up triple figures the decision was made to call it off.

Ryan admitted there wasn’t a whole lot he could take from the match.

“Not really. I think we scored 50 points in 20 or 25 minutes (in the second half) so that makes it hard,” he said.

“I don’t think we got to our kick once in the second half, we scored every time.”

Ryan added he was pleased with his side’ attitude and defence for the entirety of the one-sided encounter but was all too aware his side, and the region’s rugby league fans, will not experience many days quite like Sunday.

In other round one results, Macquarie scored a tough 26-20 win over Nyngan while Forbes began its premiership defence in style courtesy of a 64-20 win over the Wellington Cowboys and Brandon Paige scored a hat-trick in Parkes’ 56-32 victory over the Narromine Jets at Cale Oval.

DUBBO CYMS 102 (Wade Kavanagh 6, Kieran Cubby-Shipp 2, Jyie Chapman 2, Jarryn Powyer, Lincoln Kavanagh, Ben Marlin, Brad Pickering, Hayden Howell, Alex Bonham, Hamish Astill tries; Bonham 10 goals, Pickering seven goals) defeated DUBBO WESTSIDE 0
