It was much more of a contest than last time the two met, but at the end of Sunday’s derby between Dubbo CYMS and Westside it was a result Group 11 fans have become all too used to this season.
The Fishies ran out 72-12 winners over the Rabbitohs in a match a far cry from the 102-0 drubbing handed out in round one when the match was called off 13 minutes early.
The Rabbitohs showed patches of quality and, more importantly, there was structure about their play but at the end of the day CYMS was a class above.
Brad Pickering and Kieran Cubby-Shipp both scored hat-tricks in the 13-try-to-two victory and while it was another dominant showing, there were again patches where the Fishies struggled with handling errors.
“It’s always good to get a win but it would be a heap better if we didn’t make it so hard for ourselves, that’s for sure,” Cubby-Shipp said.
”I think we are our own worst enemy. In the first 10 or 20 minutes we just knocked the ball on and we gave the other side a lot of ball and we keep inviting them in time after time and that’s something we need to change.”
While the view from the CYMS camp was again some harsh self-analysis, Westside interim coach Col Fuller was relatively pleased with his side’s performance.
Since taking on the job, Fuller has brought about improved efforts by the men in red and green but that breakthrough victory continues to allude them, with a number of players being forced to back up from reserves on Sunday.
The Rabbitohs started with real vigour at Caltex Park but an error in their own half led to CYMS five-eighth Pickering open the scoring.
Cubby-Shipp jinked, stepped and then race 50m to extend the lead just five minutes later and then CYMS found their groove and it was soon 32-0 after 32 minutes, with Westside skipper Brayden Peachey also spending time in the bin during that period.
Westside got one back when Carl Ralph planted down a grubber and they scored the first points off the second half through winger Alfred Smith, off the back of a CYMS error.
But after that it was all one-way traffic and both Pickering and fullback Cubby-Shipp sealed their trebles inside the final 10 minutes.
Despite an eighth successive loss, Fuller was remaining positive.
“We went alright. If I had the side I’d talked about, that first 13, we would have went alright but considering reserve grade is struggling for players then five of our players played a full game there,” he said.
“A big effort from our boys and there was four or five easy tries they (CYMS) scored and we cut them out and we’re in the game.
“We’ve got a bit of structure and two or three new blokes in there … there’s positive signs.”
Front rowers Jarryn Powyer, who grabbed a double, and Jackson Fletcher were strong up front for CYMS while Luke Jenkins again showed class is guiding his side around and set up a Hayden Howell try with a deft chip kick.
Sam Coe was a powerful and elusive for the Rabbitohs in defeat while Peachey improved after his binning and lock Ty Blanchett was also full of effort.
DUBBO CYMS 72 (Brad Pickering 3, Kieran Cubby-Shipp 3, Jarryn Powyer 2, Ben Marlin, Wade Kavanagh, Maika Serelevu, Joeby Vetakaula, Hayden Howell tries; Alex Bonham 6 goals, Pickering 4) defeated DUBBO WESTSIDE 12 (Carl Ralph, Alfred Smith tries; Brayden Peachey 2 goals)
